Arab Reform and Democracy Program

The Program on Arab Reform and Democracy at the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law at Stanford University examines the different social and political dynamics within Arab countries and the evolution of their political systems, focusing on the prospects, conditions, and possible pathways for political reform in the region. This multidisciplinary program brings together both scholars and practitioners-from the policy making, civil society, NGO (non-government organization), media, and political communities-as well as other actors of diverse backgrounds from the Arab world, to consider how democratization and more responsive and accountable governance might be achieved, as a general challenge for the region and within specific Arab countries. Rethinking Libya’s Political Isolation Law

In a recently released paper titled “Rethinking Libya’s Political Isolation Law" co-produced by Brookings Doha Center and ARD, Roman David and Houda Mzioudet examine the controversy over Libya’s Political Isolation Law that passed in May 2013 and its likely effects. The Brookings Doha Center-Stanford Project on Arab Transitions aims to generate comprehensive analysis of the conditions affecting democratization and good governance during the period of Arab transition.

Khatib to lead Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut

Lina Khatib, co-founding head of the Program on Arab Reform and Democracy at CDDRL, has announced that she will step down from the position in December to lead the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut.
